Trent Alexander-Arnold missed a huge chance as Arsenal stay on top of the Premier League table over Christmas in a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Mo Salah led a deadly counter-attack with four Liverpool players lining up on the Egyptians right. It fell to Alexander-Arnold in space who struck it powerfully but it rattled the crossbar keeping the scoreline level.

After Jurgen Klopp's complaints about Anfield's atmosphere on Wednesday night, the Liverpool crowd took this into account as they created a hostile atmosphere for the Gunners but it did not affect the travellers as they took the lead in the fourth minute from a free kick.

Martin Ødegaard crossed his free kick in from the left hand side which was met by the head of Gabriel who put it in the back of the net.

The Norwegian was heavily involved in the first half and was lucky to not give away a penalty for handball when it appeared to hit his hand but it was dismissed by VAR after a check.

Salah levelled things up with a smashing strike into the near corner. Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a sublime switch of play to the Egyptian who twisted past Oleksandr Zinchenko and then rustled the back of the net with a powerful strike.

Kostas Tsimikas was forced off with a suspected shoulder injury in the 35th minute due to colliding with Jurgen Klopp on the touchline after a heavy tackle from Bukayo Saka.

Gabriel Martinelli almost put the visitors back ahead when he put his shot just wide of the post. Saka did the hard work getting past Alisson but there was more Liverpool defenders behind the goalkeeper causing the Englishmen to lose control of the ball which resulted in Martinelli taking a first time shot from the loose ball.

The second half started intensely with Liverpool getting plenty of chances due to their high press on the Arsenal defence. Joe Gomez who came on for Tsimikas at left back came close when his curled shot went wide of the far post.

Harvey Elliott who has impressed every time he has played this season almost struck gold but his long range effort was pushed onto the post by David Raya.
