Serbia put up more of a fight in the second half and put England on the back foot but were unable to capitalise on their chances.
Substitutes Dušan Tadić and Luka Jović almost linked up nicely to create the equaliser but Jović was unable to turn the ball past Jordan Pickford after Tadić glided past both Kieran Trippier and Declan Rice.
Jude Bellingham powerfully headed past Predrag Rajković to open the scoring for England in the 13th minute which was their only shot on target in the first half.
Bukayo Saka brilliantly got on the end of Kyle Walker's pass before putting a dangerous cross into the area which allowed Bellingham to dive in and place his header into the left hand side.
The Three Lions had opportunities to add to their tally in the first half through Saka who put dangerous balls into the box but the other ten England players were nowhere to be seen in order to finish the moves off.
John Stones almost gifted Serbia an equaliser at the death of the first 45 minutes but recovered just in time to give a corner instead which meant England headed into the break with a narrow lead.
Captain Harry Kane struggled to get heavily involved in the game with only one shot on target in the whole 90 minutes. However his effort did end up hitting the crossbar after Rajković brilliantly pushed it onto the underside of the bar.
