Earlier in the week, it was announced that the 27-year-old would not sign a new deal with the Reds to extend his stay in England, as he favoured a move back home to the United States.

Charleston Battery announced on Wednesday that Kelly had joined the USL Championship side on a multi-year contract, and the midfielder played a pivotal role in his first game back in the States.

The Black and Yellows beat South Georgia Tormenta FC 5-4 on penalties after the game finished 3-3 in the USL Cup.

Kelly, wearing the number 29 shirt, came on in the 62nd minute and, just two minutes later, assisted Emilio Ycaza to put the Black and Yellows 3-1 ahead.

The midfielder's quick feet, as seen at Crawley, were on display as he wiggled his way past three opponents inside the penalty area before laying the ball back to Ycaza, whose strike found the bottom corner.

However, South Georgia Tormenta scored two late goals to send the game straight to penalties.

Kelly took the fifth penalty and calmly converted from the spot, sealing a memorable first appearance for Charleston Battery.
