Lyon were handed a provisional relegation during the last meeting with the French football financial body, the DNCG, on the condition that if their financial situation didn't improve, they would be demoted to the second tier of French football.

Eagle Football Group, the consortium that owns OL, pulled multiple financial levers in an attempt to convince the DNCG that the club's financial health had significantly improved. These included the sale of John Textor's stake in Crystal Palace and the club's women's team. However, these efforts failed to meet the DNCG's financial requirements.

Rayan Cherki was also sold to Manchester City for £31 million in a bid to reduce the club's significant debt. But despite these measures, Lyon's financial situation has not improved sufficiently, and they will now compete in Ligue 2 next season.

Les Gones, who have won Ligue 1 seven times, finished the 2024/25 season in sixth place — securing a Europa League qualification spot.
