The Reds had several chances to take the lead early on, the best falling to Kabby Tshimanga, who somehow failed to convert into an open goal. They were punished just before the half-hour mark when Kai Whitmore latched onto a through ball, rounded Harvey Davies, and slotted into an empty net.
Two minutes later, Liam Shepard doubled the Welsh side's lead, getting on the end of Matthew Baker's flick-on. Despite a late lifeline from Max Anderson, Crawley couldn't find an equaliser, and their slow start to the season continued.
Player Ratings
Harvey Davies – 6
Had little to do in the first half but dealt confidently with crosses and long balls. Was caught out of position for the opener but powerless to stop the second.
Charlie Barker – 5
Went close with a header in the second half and linked well on the right when pushing forward.
Dion Conroy – 5
Led from the back and almost scored with a brilliantly struck free-kick, well saved by the keeper.
Josh Flint – 5
Tried to link up with Adeyemo using long balls over the top. Could have done better in preventing the first goal.
Jay Williams – 6
Controlled the tempo in midfield and handled most defensive duties well. Grew frustrated after Crawley fell behind and was substituted late on.
Reece Brown – 5
Looked to get forward and had a great chance in the second half, dragging his shot wide. Replaced with 20 minutes to go.
Kyle Scott – 6
Worked tirelessly in midfield, making five tackles and moving the ball smartly, but couldn't influence the comeback.
Ade Adeyemo – 6
Lively throughout and a constant threat. Missed two big one-on-one chances in the first half and went close from a corner after the break.
Harry McKirdy – 5
Often isolated on the right flank and struggled in possession. Had a late shot blocked.
Gavan Holohan – 5
Linked play well between midfield and attack but saw his best effort deflected narrowly wide. Subbed after Crawley went behind.

Battled against Newport's strong centre-backs. Missed Crawley's best chance with an open goal in the second half.
