Preston Johnson Steps Down as Crawley Town Chairman Amid Ownership Changes

Crawley Town chairman and CEO Preston Johnson has officially stepped down following a change in control at the club, as new lead investors take over. Johnson cited a difference in vision for Crawley's future as the reason behind his departure.

Since WAGMI United's takeover in April 2022, Johnson has been a central figure at the club, initially serving as co-chairman alongside Eben Smith. He stepped down following Crawley's successful play-off campaign in May 2024 but returned shortly after as chairman and CEO ahead of the 2024/25 season.

However, with new investors now leading the club — Daniel Khalili, Ryan Gilbert, and Maxwell Strowman, as confirmed in an official club statement — Johnson explained that his philosophy around recruitment and strategy no longer aligned with the new direction.

"WAGMI United is in the process of transitioning to new lead investors who will guide the club forward — and they have a different vision for its future," Johnson wrote.

"As a result, this summer's player recruitment has gone in a different direction than the data-driven approach that powered our success over the past few years.

"I do not believe this shift represents the best path forward for the club, which is why I have made the difficult decision to step back and make space for the new leadership to pursue their vision."

In response to his departure, Crawley Town thanked Johnson for his service and reaffirmed their continued commitment to a balanced recruitment strategy.

"Crawley Town Football Club thanks Preston Johnson for his service as Chairman and CEO. We are grateful for his innovation, leadership, and commitment over the past few years.

"Recruitment at Crawley Town is, and will remain, a balanced process that draws on data, experience, and instinct. While we acknowledge Preston's recent statement, we believe that multiple perspectives contribute to a successful football strategy.

"Data will continue to play a key role in our decision-making, alongside other important considerations."

As Crawley enters a new chapter under fresh leadership, the club steps away from a bold and often debated era. WAGMI United's vision to become "the internet's team" drew global attention, but their time in charge brought both progress and challenges.

An official update regarding the club's ownership and leadership structure is expected soon, as preparations continue for the new League Two season.
