The Reds appeared to be in pole position to sign the 22-year-old after both Manchester City and Bayern Munich pulled out of negotiations. However, AS reports that Los Blancos believe they can lure the German international to the Santiago Bernabéu—especially with head coach Xabi Alonso set to move from Bayer Leverkusen to Madrid.

A move to Liverpool had been progressing positively, with Wirtz reportedly keen on a switch to Anfield. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed on Wednesday (May 28) that Bayer Leverkusen are "discussing" bonuses and other "details of the deal" as Liverpool look to meet the club's demands.

Romano said: "Liverpool are working on the Milos Kerkez deal, and then for Florian Wirtz, the agreement with the player is done, and conversations are underway with Bayer Leverkusen.

"After the first proposal, they are discussing bonuses and all the details of the deal, but for sure, they are working hard to get the Florian Wirtz deal done, and it won't take too long.

"That's the message coming from those close to the deal. My expectation remains for this deal to be completed, with Florian Wirtz joining Liverpool."

Any deal for Wirtz is expected to be the biggest of the summer, with Bayer Leverkusen demanding around £125 million for the German superstar, according to multiple reports.

The attacking midfielder scored 16 goals and provided 14 assists in 44 appearances this season.
