The 20-year-old Republic of Ireland international will undergo a medical in Italy ahead of the switch, which is expected to be confirmed within days. Ferguson was spotted greeting fans and signing autographs in Rome on Saturday, with footage circulating on social media.

After breaking through during a standout 2022–23 season — scoring nine goals and earning a PFA Young Player of the Year nomination — Ferguson's progress stalled last term. A combination of injuries and dips in form saw him fall out of favour at Brighton, and a January loan to West Ham yielded just eight appearances, only one of which was a start under then-manager Graham Potter.

Now, Roma have identified Ferguson as a key addition to their forward line, with the departure of Tammy Abraham — currently on loan at Besiktas under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer — opening up space in their squad. The move could offer Ferguson a fresh opportunity in Serie A to rediscover the form that once made him one of the Premier League's most exciting young strikers.

With new Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler unlikely to count on Ferguson in the early stages of the season, a temporary switch abroad may be the chance he needs to reset and rebuild.
