The Perfect Day Trip Just 30 Minutes from Vilnius
Just 30 minutes from the heart of Vilnius lies a fairytale sight that feels worlds away, a magnificent stone castle floating in the middle of Lake Galvė.

If you are looking for the ideal day trip outside Lithuania's capital, Trakai should be at the top of your list. This small lakeside town is postcard perfect, with colourful wooden houses, peaceful shores and the spectacular Trakai Island Castle taking centre stage.
For anyone nervous about using public transport in a new country, it could not be easier. From Vilnius main train station, you can buy your ticket at a self service machine or online through the LTG website. A return ticket costs as little as €6 and just 30 minutes later you will step off the train into a scene straight from a storybook.
As soon as you arrive at Trakai station, the lake greets you with mirror like reflections and open skies. Head towards the water, turn left and follow the scenic path that winds along the lakeshore. With every step, the red brick towers of Trakai Castle slowly rise in the distance.

For a different perspective, you can hire a small rowboat or pedal boat from the lakeshore. Gliding across the calm water offers one of the most unforgettable views in Lithuania, especially in the late afternoon light.
A Town Worth Wandering
Beyond the castle, Trakai is a place to slow down and explore. Stroll through quiet streets lined with colourful wooden houses, browse the small craft shops selling handmade souvenirs, or simply enjoy the tranquil setting.
If you enjoy walking, several trails circle Lake Galvė and reveal hidden viewpoints and picnic spots. Those craving a bit of sun can visit nearby Lake Akmena, which has a sandy beach, swimming area, lifeguards, volleyball courts and a café, making it perfect for a relaxed summer afternoon.
If you have extra time, venture up to the Hill of Angels where more than forty wooden sculptures watch over the landscape from the hilltop. It is open all day, free to visit and offers a peaceful and memorable stop in the Lithuanian countryside.
