Stephenson started the first 45 minutes against the Championship side at centre-back — a position in which he has had limited experience.

However, his performance was composed and confident at the heart of the defence. He read the game well and helped dictate the tempo, completing more passes (34) than any other player on the pitch in the first half — a testament to his football intelligence and ability to control play.

With Liverpool and new head coach Arne Slot looking to strengthen their defensive options, Stephenson's display suggested that the answer might already be in the squad. After such an impressive showing, it's likely we'll see more of the youngster throughout the remainder of pre-season.

Career so far

Stephenson signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in 2020 after joining from Sunderland's Under-15s, and later penned an extension in 2022.

The midfielder became a regular for Liverpool's Under-21s during the 2022/23 season, helping the side finish as runners-up in Premier League 2.

The 2023/24 campaign marked a major step in his development as he joined League Two side Barrow on loan. There, he made 34 appearances, primarily playing as a right-back.

The Bluebirds narrowly missed out on the play-offs by a single point, but the experience proved invaluable for Stephenson. His hard work and tough tackling quickly made him a fan favourite.

This past season, Stephenson spent time with Scottish Premiership side Dundee United, where he was named the club's Young Player of the Season.

Across his 34 appearances, Stephenson showcased his versatility by featuring in multiple positions, including central midfield and right wing-back. He contributed three goals and two assists, helping the Terrors finish fourth and qualify for European football.
